School center with dormitory "Dositej Obradovic" , Subotica

 

 

The School center with dormitory "Dositej Obradović" is a complex institution that deals with the upbringing and education of children with disabilities, habilitation, rehabilitation, accommodation and care  for students from the earliest age until the end of professional training.

Our users: children / students with different types of developmental disabilities:

- hearing impairment

- undeveloped speech of various etiology

- mental retardation

- autism

- associated disturbances

- emotional difficulties

- behavioral problems

- social difficulties

Until 1945, there was not a single school for hearing-impaired children in Vojvodina. The first was opened in Inđija, but in 1961. it was transferred to Subotica and was named the Institute for Deaf Children. Over time, the very physionomy of the school changes, and it then becomes a complete re/habilitation institution for the educational and professional training of the hearing impaired.

In accordance with inclusive changes in education, on September 1, 2014. the name of the school is changed.

The previous name - the school center for upbringing and education of hearing-impaired persons, changed to its current name after 40 years. However, every change in the name of the institution significantly changed the structure of the school's work as well as the accompanying activities that changed its function.    

 

 

School facilities

 

 

Our teachers 

All the teachers in our school are qualified special education teachers of various specializations (speech therapists in Serbian and Hungarian, audiologists, special pedagogues, psychomotor re-educators).

In addition to teaching, all teachers also perform individual treatments with students. Since our school also has a dormitory for accommodation of students, educators and medical staff work within it.

 We recently equipped the hearing examination room with the most modern equipment and opened a counseling center to support families of children with disabilities or children with risk factors from birth to 6 years of age.

 

 

Boarding school 

The boarding school for children is located in the attic of the building, it is almost renovated and can accommodate about 100 students. The rooms are mostly with three beds and are adapted for students.

After class, all students can stay in the classrooms to do homework with the teachers, but not all of them stay to sleep. Mostly there are children who are not from Subotica or children who have a very poor financial status. Within the home there is a room with computers, classrooms for homework, a living room for rest, a kitchen and a dining room, an outpatient room.

Various extracurricular activities are available to the students, such as Zumba, table tennis, football, going to the cinema, drama section, folklore, environmental section, art workshops, skating...

We are especially proud of our Little School of Sign Language...

 

 

 

 

 

Sensory garden

Last year we implemented a large project in cooperation with the Teras Association. We opened the Sensory Garden, which is an educational, interactive, green oasis designed for learning, sensory-motor stimulation and relaxation for children with disabilities. Within the sensory garden, we will implement STEAM teaching content (from the subjects of biology, the world around us, mathematics, geography, chemistry. ..) through specific examples, following different processes and cycles that take place in living nature.
